Tacoma Pride Kicks Off With “Why Marriage Matters” Video by Mayor Strickland

Washington United for Marriage (WUM), the broad coalition working to defend the state’s bipartisan marriage law, today released a video of Tacoma Mayor Marilyn Strickland in its ongoing series of Washingtonians talking about “Why Marriage Matters”.

Mayor Strickland’s eloquent reflections on her own marriage captures much of the passion of so many others dedicated to ensuring Referendum 74 is approved.

Mayor Strickland recounts how she met her husband on the project, Tacoma Reads Together. Marrying a year later, the Mayor says their marriage “is really a demonstration of our love and commitment to one another. It’s a signal to the entire society of our commitment, and it’s something I believe all loving adults should have the opportunity to do so if they want to.”

Noting a time in this country when her parents would not have been able to marry in some states, Mayor Strickland says, “So I take this issue of marriage equality very seriously and personally. Having Washington State recognize marriage equality is a moment that we can all be proud of.”

“We are so proud of Mayor Strickland and honored that she would share the values and commitment of her own marriage to tell a broader story,” said Zach Silk, WUM’s campaign manager. “The truth is only marriage conveys that universal bond that everyone sees and respects. That’s why it’s so important that we defend our marriage law which allows everyone to marry the person they love.”

With Tacoma Pride activities kicking off today, WUM volunteers will be canvassing supporters during Pride on the Park tomorrow afternoon. In addition to talking to voters about the need to Approve Referendum 74, WUM will also have a booth in the park and campaign merchandise will be displayed and available. All proceeds benefit the campaign to Approve Referendum 74.
